Prospect, Oregon.<\/strong>\u00a0 Started out in Gold Beach, on the Oregon South Coast.\u00a0 It looked like it was going to be another sunny day, but as we\u00a0started off,\u00a0we soon got fogged in.\u00a0 That spoiled P.J.&#8217;s intent to take an &#8220;Aunt Esther postcard picture&#8221; of Arch Rock and other South Coast monoliths.\u00a0 We could not see a thing.<\/p>\n<p>On to Redwood National Park, dipped into California.\u00a0 Two of Aunt Esther&#8217;s postcards\u00a0today were\u00a0in a\u00a0tacky park called the &#8220;The Trees of Mystery&#8221;, with a talking 45-foot-high Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox, &#8220;Babe&#8221;.\u00a0Normally, we would not have paid to enter such a place, but Aunt Esther &#8220;made us do it&#8221;.\u00a0 One of the post cards was of the &#8220;Cathedral Tree&#8221;, a half circle of nine redwoods grown together.\u00a0 Today there are religious texts displayed and schmaltzy music playing.\u00a0 You can now rent the tree for weddings.\u00a0 I am convinced that those who do get married there will live happily after, because they would lack the discrimination to find enough fault with each other\u00a0for the necessary divorce.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, we needed to drive back to Oregon and we decided to take a &#8220;shortcut&#8221; through the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.\u00a0 It was a one-lane dirt road that snaked between giant redwood trees, but what a spectacle!\u00a0 The highlight of the day and totally unexpected!<\/p>\n<p>Once we crossed the Cascades on our way to Crater Lake, the weather changed from a\u00a0foggy 57 (14 C) to a smokey 86 F (30 C).\u00a0 We have not experienced heat in three weeks!\u00a0 The\u00a0sky turned smokey yellow because of forest fires.\u00a0 &#8216;Tis the season.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_669\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-669\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pjgardner.com\/travel1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Paul-Bunyan.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/pjgardner.com\/travel1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Paul-Bunyan.png\" alt=\"Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox\" title=\"Paul Bunyan\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-669\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pjgardner.com\/travel1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Paul-Bunyan.png 400w, https:\/\/pjgardner.com\/travel1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/Paul-Bunyan-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 85vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox at &#8220;Trees of Mystery&#8221;
