{"id":388,"date":"2012-08-20T16:15:24","date_gmt":"2012-08-20T23:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pjgardner.com\/travel\/?p=388"},"modified":"2016-08-28T10:45:38","modified_gmt":"2016-08-28T17:45:38","slug":"august-20-chasing-aunt-esthers-postcards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pjgardner.com\/travel1\/2012\/08\/20\/august-20-chasing-aunt-esthers-postcards\/","title":{"rendered":"August 20: Chasing Aunt Esther&#8217;s Postcards in Washington State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Mile 4024 &#8211; Mount Rainier National Park.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We left Seattle in the morning, but not without P.J. visiting the historic University of Washington Library building, for which she had a postcard from her Great Aunt Esther.\u00a0 After that, we went to Spanaway Lake, for which she had another postcard, with a reflection of Mount Rainier.\u00a0\u00a0The entire shoreline of this lake is now &#8220;developed&#8221;, and it was impossible to find a spot from which the postcard could have been taken.\u00a0 Next to Olympia, Washington, for two more postcards, of the Washington statehouse.\u00a0 More luck there, although the Washington Capitol building was partially covered in gauze while it is being renovated.\u00a0 Finally, on to Mount Rainier National Park.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time this trip, we tried our luck finding accommodations on the road.\u00a0 We succeeded, but in August it is definitely risky.\u00a0 Some places in the park were booked more than a week out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vintage Postcard Project:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/pjgardner.com\/vintage\/august-20-washington-state\" title=\"Aunt Esther's Vintage Postcards(new site)\">August 20: Washington State<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mile 4024 &#8211; Mount Rainier National Park.
