{"id":381,"date":"2012-08-17T18:40:02","date_gmt":"2012-08-18T01:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pjgardner.com\/travel\/?p=381"},"modified":"2012-08-21T22:41:16","modified_gmt":"2012-08-22T05:41:16","slug":"august-17-cruise-contemplations-by-arjan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pjgardner.com\/travel1\/2012\/08\/17\/august-17-cruise-contemplations-by-arjan\/","title":{"rendered":"August 17: Cruise Contemplations by Arjan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cruise is winding down.\u00a0 Again beautiful weather, walk around the ship and eat a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Some of you know I am not a \u201ccruise person\u201d.\u00a0 I went on this trip because there are not many other ways you can see Alaska\u2019s Inside Passage and Glacier Bay (which for me is still the most spectacular place I have ever seen on Earth) and because I wanted to do this with my father and stepmother.<\/p>\n<p>It\u00a0was a tremendous trip and I am glad I went, but it did not change my mind about cruise culture.\u00a0 Some fellow cruisers act like spoiled two-year olds when something does not go their way and then turn on the staff with an \u201cI payed for this\u201d attitude.\u00a0 The mostly Indonesian staff on this Dutch ship was courteous and\u00a0eternally cheerful\u00a0in spite of taking abuse from customers and management alike.\u00a0 From talking to some of them, they put in 10 to 11 hours days 7 days a week.\u00a0 However, cruise economics also forces them to be pushy, for example when serving drinks during happy hour, which\u00a0is not always appropriate.\u00a0 The irony does not escape me:\u00a0 After all these years, the liberal progressive Dutch still found a way to colonize a small part of Indonesia.\u00a0 Cruise culture does not bring out the best in people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cruise is winding down.\u00a0 Again beautiful weather, walk around the ship and eat a lot.
