#04. What I Have Done in My Life

Perry L. Gardner: Private Journal #4

It has been a while since I sat and wrote in this journal, but many thoughts have passed my mind since the last time, and they should have been recorded. Just now, the thought-chain ended on what I have done in my life that I am proud of in my career.

I think I played a leadership role in getting the nose-wheel tow catapult gear on Grumman aircraft (A-6 & E-2), which made a significant step forward in operational and logistical efficiency on carrier aircraft. I played a significant role in putting Echo II into orbit—An event of more psychological than practical importance. I played a part in the Moon Landing drama. Any of these things could have been done by another, but I did it.

And the energy conservation bit was truly an important step. With Odds’ help we made a breakthrough in the conventional thinking and made something important happen. I guess all these things are significant to me because they were out in front in each case, breaking new ground. It is interesting that my high school yearbook called me “Columbus”.

Now I get all fired up about Economic and Social Justice, and wonder when or if the world will ever catch up to seeing things my way. Not because it is as an ego trip, but because it is important to the world. It is exciting and frustrating at the same time. That is why I read dull books on economics, looking for answers. But it feels lonely with no one to talk to, to share intellectual ideas with. Am I getting cynical?
