#19. Family Reunion

Perry L. Gardner: Private Journal #19
Monday, 12:08 AM, August 15, 1988

Time to visit my journal again. It has been a very special week with family, and now, by contrast, the house is empty, and I am alone here—even Bonnie is away at Cape Cod.

I felt a little nauseous after supper tonight, so I lay down in bed for a few hours, and now I feel better in the middle of the night. P.J. just called from home to say goodbye. Our goodbyes at noon yesterday were not complete. It was so nice to get her call. She is going to Europe on August 28 and coming home September 18. On October 1, we have a date to climb Mt. Monadnock with P.J., Arjan, Wendy, and me. I will have to buy my new hiking boots and break them in beforehand.

Goodbyes to David and family were also by phone this evening—I had invited them over to see me at home, but it didn’t work out. It has been a hectic week, but a wonderful one at the same time. The evening sail with the adults was a special event—everyone seemed to be enjoying it very much.

The sail with grandchildren was also very special. I would have liked to have more quiet time with each of them, but it was all good quality visit, and, in fact, I spent more time with family this week than I have in ages.

PLG & Sara

Perry Gardner with Grandaughter Sara (1985?)

Sara was so affectionate—I really feel she loves her Granddaddy. It feels good. I am looking forward to visiting Orlando in November. Philip had hugs for me, too. I was sorry he had the asthma attack and had to go to the hospital, and I didn’t get to say goodbye to him and to Barbara.

I must write letters to them all. It would be most appropriate. Also stay away from champagne—it really affected me, and I felt out of it as a result.
